Abstract

With the recent expansion of pet humanization, pets are increasingly considered as family members. However, due to the rising number of dual-income households, dogs often spend extended periods alone, resulting in behavioral issues such as separation anxiety and boredom. This study aims to develop an IoT-based dog play brand, 'PEMBER', employing a User-Centered Design (UCD) approach to support emotional stability and autonomous play for dogs during owner absences. Based on user interviews (FGI), three key play scenarios were identified: designated location response, sound signal response, and touch-based reward interaction. A prototype incorporating these scenarios was developed and tested in realistic user environments. Test results demonstrated that repeated training significantly improved dogs' autonomous engagement and behavior, validating the effectiveness of remote control and automated reward systems. Thus, this study highlights the potential of user-centered approaches to facilitate positive behavioral outcomes in dogs during owner absences.

Design process for user-centered IoT-based dog play product development

Analysis of problematic behavior types

Interview participant profiles

Required play types

Analysis of user requirements for IoT-based devices

Fig. 1.

Prototype components for user environment testing

Fig. 2.

User environment test configuration

Fig. 3.

Results of prototype user environment testing and analysis of dog behavior

Integrated evaluation of user environment test using prototype over 3 days

Fig. 4.

PEMBER brand concept

Fig. 6.

Technical diagram of PEMBER

Fig. 7.

PEMBER system configuration
